Muttonbirds kai of choice as Maori Language Week begins

CONSUMING rather than cooking almost derailed some of the personalities taking part in a cook-off in central Wellington to launch Maori Language Week.

Maori Language Commission chief executive Glenis Philip- Barbara said food was chosen as this year’s theme – “Te Mahi Kai” or the language of food – because it played a key role in everyday life.

“Food gives us an excuse to come together and practise our language,” she said.

So with the help of four local chefs, Maori Affairs Minister Pita Sharples, National list MP Hekia Parata, Hurricanes rugby player Jacob Ellison and Southern Steel netballer Te Huinga Reo Selby- Rickit yesterday donned their pinnies and fired up their ovens.

“I can’t cook at all, it’s terrible,” admitted Ms Selby-Rickit. “I am just hoping I don’t burn anything.”
